I-40/I-440 Rebuild Project and Local Commute Alternatives

The 11-mile stretch of I-40 between U.S. 1 and U.S. 64/264 is 30 years old and is deteriorating due to a reaction between the rock and the cement. This means the N.C. Dept. of Transportation (NCDOT) needs to dig it out and replace the pavement. Instead of finding another route to work, why not save some green and use another local commute alternative? Your wallet and the environment will thank you.
NCDOT spent $8.5 million for pavement repair on the I-40 section in 2007, and $3.4 million for pavement work on the I-440 section in 2009. Those were temporary fixes until funding was available for this project, which is expected to cost $170 million.
NCDOT hired a contractor in early 2013. Minor work, such as shoulder strengthening, began in the spring. Major construction, which involves long-term lane closures, is scheduled to begin in the fall and be complete in about three years.
Goal: Currently, 110,000 cars travel this stretch every day. NCDOT has a goal to get at least 30,000 drivers to use alternate routes, alternate work schedules or alternate modes of transportation.
